Free Inquiry – Change in Momentum

The key to change is to let go of fear.”

Rosanne Cash

My plan has changed. I find change scary, especially when the base of that change is interwoven with my educational success. However, I want to embrace the change, embrace the natural flux in my ideas and motivation, and acknowledge that wanting to change my plans is natural.

I originally wanted to use natural linen fibres to design a garment to sew, but I then realized the physical supplies being at home would make this project incredibly difficult. But as I was brainstorming design ideas on Pinterest, and finding inspiration for what I wanted to make I had an Idea: why not use this inquiry to create a concept using digital art.

Rather than scouring the internet to find inspiration and ideas for a clothing line, why not create my own inspiration.

The personal goals I have for myself in pursuit of this project:

  • improve my ability to navigate procreate on my Ipad
  • create a concept that I feel inspired by, consisting of a colour scheme, design ideas, fabric art designs (patterns) and textures that fit within the concept.

Firstly, I drafted a colour scheme that embodied what currently inspires me, to create a direction where I want to go with this concept.

This is the first sketch I made using my colour scheme – I really like how this turned out, however Im not sure this is the direction I really want to go in. I think I want my concept to be more dark and mysterious.

Over the weekend, I found some spare time to play around with some textiles and sewing supplies, because I felt inspired and thought it would help me think of ideas for this project! I found an old pair of pants that didn’t fit me anymore, and instead of throwing them out or donating them, I used the fabric to create my own pattern. In the photos attached you can have a peak into my artistic process, most of which wasn’t captured because there are alot of trials and errors that make up my sewing days. I started out by taping out what kind of bodice I want, pinning fabric to the bodice, and folding and pinning until things look the way I want. then, I try again in a cleaner way (cleaner cuts, folding down hems, etc) which leaves me where I currently am in this project.

After creating this first step of a bodice, I am definitely starting to notice some themes or aspects that I want to include in this concept – So to continue this momentum I am going to brainstorm some key words:

  • structured
  • soft
  • angelic
  • comfortable
  • adjustable
  • elegant
  • upcycled

As I started to sketch and brainstorm what I want this piece to look like, a lot of these elements became really clear – especially elegance.

Something I really started to notice is how much influence my current interests have on my design and concept ideas. For the past 6 months I have been really interested in fantasy novels – and I think the glory and golden glamour of these books are starting to heavily inspire where this concept is going.
